Lesy sú na Zemi viac ako 350 miliónov rokov. Počas tejto doby sa stali kolískou miliónom druhov organizmov, vrátane človeka, stabilizovali klímu Zeme a podmienky vhodné pre život. To všetko dokázali bez pomoci človeka a stávali sa stále rozmanitejšími, zložitejšími a stabilnejšími.
